In Sudbury and across Northeastern Ontario people have been showing their strong support for the CBC. Following an announcement by the CBC senior management that the Sudbury English radio division, which services the entire Northeast, would lose half it’s staff, NDP MP’s across the region took immediate action.

Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault rallied with CBC staff shortly after the cuts were announced and launched a petition from his office, focusing attention throughout the media of the role and importance of Canada’s public broadcaster. “The loss of another local station would have a much bigger impact on Sudbury than job losses alone. Local broadcasters play a vital role in our communities. They help tell our stories and build our identities. Without these stations we are at risk of losing our local voices,” Thibeault said.

To show the breadth of support in the community for the CBC, Glenn Thibeault and local musicians worked together to organize a rally and concert in support of the CBC for Sunday April 5^th, featuring many of Sudbury and the North’s best known performers – Stephane Paquette, Jennifer Plummer, Kevin Closs, Jeff Wiseman and many more, as well as all the MP’s from the northeast.

While the impact of the cuts is not yet known, producer of news and current affairs Conway Fraser of CBC Northeastern Ontario is certain that the cuts will mean a significant loss of programming. Glenn Thibeault and other NDPMP are calling on Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore to consider the impact of major program cuts to the CBC, and to intervene with immediate bridge funding and a long term increase in support for the public broadcaster.
